TIME Magazine’s 2024 Person of the Year: Who Will Take the Title?

TIME Magazine’s 2024 Person of the Year will be announced on Thursday, December 12, and the top 10 finalists have been revealed.

Time magazine’s annual feature, “Person of the Year“, recognizes an individual, group, idea, or object that has notably influenced the year. The selection process is secretive; an online reader poll exists but does not affect the choice.

This tradition began in 1927, initially highlighting Charles Lindbergh as the first “Man of the Year” in early 1928. Before the online poll, readers could provide input via mail.

These individuals have significantly impacted the world, for better or worse, over the past year.

Here Are The Ten Finalists For 2024

Kamala Harris

The former US Vice President ran for president, focusing on reproductive rights and slamming Donald Trump for his role in the US Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. Although she lost the election, her campaign highlighted crucial issues.

Kate Middleton

The Princess of Wales made international headlines after being hospitalized for two weeks for a “planned abdominal surgery.” She later revealed that she had been diagnosed with cancer and completed chemotherapy treatment in September. Middleton’s openness sparked conversations about privacy and health for public figures.

Elon Musk

The Tesla CEO stepped into politics, endorsing Donald Trump and helping form his presidential agenda. Musk’s influence extends beyond business, with his social media platform X (formerly Twitter) playing a significant role in shaping public discourse.

Yulia Navalnaya

After her husband Alexei Navalny’s death in prison, Russian economist Yulia Navalnaya accused President Vladimir Putin of killing him. She has continued her husband’s work, meeting with world leaders, including US President Joe Biden.

Benjamin Netanyahu

The Israeli Prime Minister has been a key figure in the war on Hamas despite criticism and arrest warrants issued by the International Criminal Court. Netanyahu has defied criticism, continuing his military assault on the Gaza Strip.

Jerome Powell

As Chairman of the US Federal Reserve, Jerome Powell has navigated the economy through the 2024 election. Despite criticism from Donald Trump, Powell has stressed the importance of the Fed’s independence from political parties and candidates.

Joe Rogan

The popular podcaster has had a major year, releasing a stand-up special and interviewing Donald Trump. Rogan’s endorsement of Trump has been seen as influential, particularly among young male voters.

Claudia Sheinbaum

Mexico’s first female President has focused on fighting for the poor and responding to Donald Trump’s tariffs. Sheinbaum has taken office at a time when Mexico faces significant challenges, including a struggling economy and rising organized violence.

Donald Trump

The former US President made a stunning comeback, winning the 2024 election despite being convicted of fraud. Trump’s victory has been seen as history-making, and he became the oldest President in US history.

Mark Zuckerberg

The Meta CEO faced government scrutiny and criticism over misinformation on Facebook. Zuckerberg’s net worth has reached $210 billion, making him the fourth richest person globally.

TIME’s Person of the Year is awarded to the person who has had the biggest impact on the world, for good or ill, over the past year. The winner will be announced on Thursday.
