Over 50 Women and Children Kidnapped in Zamfara State, Nigeria

Over 50 women and children were kidnapped during a raid in Kakin Dawa village, located in Nigeria’s Zamfara state. This attack occurred on Sunday. The armed assailants were all reportedly on motorbikes.

Residents reported that the bandits stormed homes at around 12.30 GMT. They were armed with assault rifles and went from house to house, taking people.

Later, we found out that they kidnapped more than 50 women, including married women and girls,” revealed one resident, Hassan Ya’u, who escaped but lost his younger sister to the attackers.

“We are appealing to the federal and Zamfara state governments to send more soldiers and security personnel to fight those bandits,” Ya’u added.

Where they took the captives to and for what specific purpose is not yet known.

Abdulkadir Sadia, another villager, expressed the community’s distress. He said they wanted to believe the kidnapper’s motive was to ask for a ransom, and they were helplessly still waiting to hear the kidnappers’ demands for the release of the abducted victims.

In response to the incident, Zamfara police announced that more security forces would be deployed.

Kidnapping for ransom is common in northwest Nigeria, where poverty, unemployment, and illegal firearms are rampant.

The situation adds to the widespread insecurity affecting the region, along with ongoing violence in other parts of the country.
