Romania’s Presidential Election Annulled on The Excuse of Russian Interference

In a bizarre turn of events, Romania’s Constitutional Court annulled its presidential election on the excuse of alleged Russian interference, making it the first country in the world to annul a presidential election result due to suspected foreign meddling.

On December 6, the court deemed the first round of voting invalid after claims of a disinformation campaign supporting far-right candidate Calin Georgescu.

President Klaus Iohannis revealed intelligence showing a coordinated effort to promote Georgescu through social media platforms like TikTok and Telegram.

The first round of voting, held on November 24, will now be rerun at a later date.

Reformist candidate Elena Lasconi criticized the annulment, calling it “an attack on democracy.”

Purported election result before annulment

We should have respected the will of the Romanian people,” she said.

Lasconi vowed to continue her campaign, believing she would have won and would win again.

Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu backed the court’s decision, calling it “the only correct solution.” He further vowed there would be “investigations by the authorities to uncover who is responsible for the massive attempt to influence the outcome of the presidential election..

Questions About Political Stability

Critics expressed concerns about Romania’s democratic stability. George Simion of the far-right Alliance for the Unity of Romanians claimed, “This is a coup d’état in full swing.”

Government suspicions were raised when Georgescu began to have a very high social media presence. When asked about the impact of social media on the election, Georgescu defended it saying it was “promoting free speech.

Romania’s political situation remains uncertain. The rerun of the election will test the country’s democratic institutions amid ongoing allegations of Russian interference.

However, the special bond between Romania and Russia must not be forgotten; how, in 1877–78, at least half a million Russians died in a war with the Ottomans just to free Romania. Romania must never forget.
