Pa James Achovwuko Oghoroko, the President-General of Okuama Community in Delta State, has died in military detention.
Oghoroko was arrested in August 2024, along with other community leaders, after the military alleged that youths from the community killed 17 soldiers.
Oghoroko died on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, from alleged torture.
The news of his death has thrown the Okuama community into mourning.
Community leaders condemned Oghoroko’s death and raised the alarm regarding another detained leader, Pa Dennis Okugbaye, battling a life-threatening ailment in the same undisclosed military facility.
Oghoroko’s arrest was part of a crackdown on the Okuama community, which was accused of killing 17 soldiers.
The community strongly denied the allegations, pointing instead to an influential government contractor from a neighbouring community who they claimed was causing disaffection between them.
The Okuama community has filed several lawsuits against the Nigerian Army, demanding justice and N100 million in damages for the illegal detention of their leaders.
Chief Albert Akpomudje SAN, who is leading the community’s legal team, described Oghoroko’s death as “disturbing“. He said he was about to meet the deceased family members and his law team to determine their next course of action.
