A heartwarming tale unfolded in Illinois, USA, where police deputies saved a pregnant woman facing a life-threatening situation after her vehicle’s brakes failed, sending her toward a lake.
The woman was saved by quick-thinking deputies who stopped her runaway car. She had managed to call the US emergency 911 number, reporting in panic, “I need help. My brakes won’t stop. My car won’t stop. My brakes aren’t working.” She also mentioned she was 20 weeks pregnant, saying, “I cannot die today.”
Deputies from the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office quickly responded to the call and caught up with the woman’s car near Carterville. Although the brake lights were blaring, the brakes had locked, and the car wasn’t slowing down, reaching a speed of around 40 km per hour.
One police deputy, Tyler Coffey, was one of the first to arrive at the scene. He later told pressmen, “Myself and two other deputies had jumped out and ran up to that vehicle to make sure that it was in park and that the driver was OK.”
The deputies performed a “rolling roadblock” to stop the car. Deputy Coffey said, “I’m just very happy that myself and the other deputies were able to get that car stopped.”
The woman and the deputies were unharmed, and the patrol vehicle only had minor damage. Sheriff Jeff Diederich praised the deputies, saying, “Had the Deputy not been on scene or delayed performing this maneuver, the driver and vehicle would have likely gone into the water upon reaching the lake.“
The incident is a reminder of the value of functional public services in helping to save lives.
