Miss Mary Omachi has been recognized as the best graduating student at Joseph Ayo Babalola University, Ikeji Arakeji, Osun State. The university will have 626 first-degree graduates, including 50 with first-class honours.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olasebikan Fakoloju, announced this on campus on Monday, December 2.
Fakoloju said, “Of these graduates, 290 earned second-class upper division, 215 got second-class lower division, 67 received third class, and four graduated with a pass.”
He noted that Mary Omachi, from the Mass Communication Department, finished with a GPA of 4.88.
The Vice-Chancellor emphasized the university’s strong academic and research performance and said all graduates excel in their fields.
Regarding the new student loan scheme from the Federal Government, Fakoloju remarked, “Private university students should benefit from this scheme.” He argued that they have the same citizenship rights as students from public universities.
“The loan scheme is titled Nigerian University Student Loan Scheme, not just for public universities,” he reasoned, insisting that the loans are meant for students to repay, not the universities.
Fakoloju further argued that “Private universities pay taxes. These taxes fund subsidized loans. It’s unfair to deny private university students access to these funds.” He suggested that the government limit the loan amount based on tuition fees.
“The government should revisit this issue and ensure loans are available for all students,” he concluded.
Some notable Nigerians, including the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, will receive honorary degrees on their convocation day.
