The recent decision to grant a private airstrip license to the Living Faith Church in Ota, Ogun State, has triggered a backlash among lawmakers. Members of the House of Representatives are now calling for an investigation into how the license was awarded to a private individual.

Bishop David Oyedepo, the church’s founder, wants to use the airstrip to fly directly, avoiding public airports.

Minister for Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo announced in October that the government approved the airstrip’s construction. Keyamo stated that the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NEMA) would manage the airstrip on behalf of the Federal Government.

However, the license has raised questions about national security and the potential misuse of the private airstrip. Some lawmakers are demanding that the permit be revoked.

However, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has responded by urging a fair investigation into the license grant. CAN President Archbishop Daniel Okoh acknowledged the security concerns but stressed that the church followed all legal requirements to obtain the license.

The church stands firm on its commitment to legality and transparency,” Okoh said. He added that without proof, linking the church to potential illegal activities is unfair.

Revoking the license without substantial evidence could undermine the rights of religious organizations and set a troubling precedent,” he asserted.

Okoh called for open dialogue among all parties involved. He said the “situation presents an opportunity to strengthen trust between religious organizations and the state.

The Bishop encouraged everyone to see it as a chance for cooperation rather than division.
