The Second Edition of the Africa Military Games (AMGA) 2024 concluded with a grand closing ceremony on Saturday, November 30, at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, delivered the closing address, commending the sports delegates from all participating countries for their exemplary conduct and display of sportsmanship.
The VP described the critical role of joint efforts in addressing continental challenges and fostering mutual respect. He added a festive touch to the ceremony by cutting a commemorative anniversary cake, celebrating the successful conclusion of the Games.
Over 2,000 athletes from 40 nations competed in 19 sporting events at the AMGA 2024, demonstrating the continent’s athletic potential and unity. Nigeria topped the Games table with 90 Gold, followed by Algeria’s 50 and Kenya’s 18.
Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, attributed Team Nigeria’s impressive feat of winning 231 medals to discipline and hard work.
The Games appeared well organized with no major hiccups and projected a positive image of the country to the rest of Africa and the world.
The AMGA Games are intended to promote African unity and brotherliness through the power of sports.
The closing ceremony was a vibrant celebration of African diversity and camaraderie, with cultural performances and military parades adding to the festive atmosphere.
As the Games conclude, the focus now shifts to maintaining the momentum and ensuring that the sports facilities revived for the event are sustained to enhance sports development in Nigeria.
