The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has set December 13, 2024, as the date for new telecom tariffs. This affects major operators like MTN, Airtel, and Glo.

Aminu Maida, NCC’s executive vice chairman, announced the change during a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday. He confirmed that the December 13 date is final, replacing the earlier planned date of October 27, which was postponed for more consultations.

The new rules will limit telecom operators to up to seven tariff and promotional plans. The NCC wants to reduce complex offerings, improve transparency, protect consumers, and encourage fair competition.

Dr. Wada explained, “With this measure, telecom consumers will experience relief, and misconceptions about the use of data and airtime will be minimized. The commission has been conducting awareness campaigns through advertisements and advocacy to inform consumers.”

As December 13 approaches, Nigerians are bracing for changes in call, data, and SMS tariffs that could soar out of the reach of many.

Data Depletion Complaints

The Commission said it is also investigating the data waste complaints from many users. It had ordered telecom operators to hire independent auditors to crosscheck.

Still, the Commission said it was important for the public to understand correctly how data usage is calculated, especially for Android devices, which tend to consume more data than other mobile operating systems.

As a consumer-focused regulator, we want to help Nigerians understand their data usage,” said Maida.

The NCC boss also mentioned progress in telecom technology. He explained that Nigeria’s 5G rollout has improved connectivity but raised cybersecurity risks.

Recent discussions are focused on future technologies such as 6G and 7G and how to manage their associated risks and opportunities.
