Nigerian award-winning Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke claims some people are coming after him because of his comments on a recent American podcast, Big Homies House.
The music star was asked his take on diaspora Americans thinking of returning to Africa.
He described Nigeria’s current situation as “shambles” and wondered, “Leave America and go back where?”
Davido pointedly said, “It’s not cool. The economy now is in shambles.” He advised those considering the move based on what they see on television, saying, “I’m an ambassador when I go home, and I’m filming; I ain’t gonna show the bad parts.”

He complained about the currency exchange rate being “messed up.” The currency has plummeted at least 200% since President Bola Tinubu came to office in 2023.
“A lot of stuff ain’t going well. The economy is just not good anymore. Regardless, entertainment is one thing that makes Africa look good, but we don’t have the best leaders. That’s a fact.”
Cancel Culture Comes After Him
Davido’s comments rubbed Mr Tinubu’s supporters, including Joe Igbokwe and social media influencer Reno Omokri, the wrong way. They apparently planned to target his highly anticipated December concert in Nigeria to get back at him.
Joe Igbokwe has been Mr Tinubu’s long-time ally. At the same time, Omokri, who formerly accused President Tinubu of being an illicit drug lord, appeared to change his mind after Tinubu won the presidency.
But a defiant Davido reasserted himself, posting on his social media handle, “Y’all mad ‘cause we the real ambassadors!”
He said he was unmoved by the backlash from the truth he spoke, boasting, “Dem say dem go cancel my show cus of my interview … loooool I don’t have to perform in Nigeria,” he tweeted.
Davido is considered one of Africa’s most successful international musicians and is the son of Chief Adedeji Adeleke, a wealthy industrialist from Osun State.
Nevertheless, he has often been indirectly entangled in politics. His uncle, Mr Ademola Adeleke, is the governor of his state from the opposition party, and Davido tends to support opposition candidates.
But now, with the cancel culture peddled against him, even the December concert, if it goes on, will have to have extra security to keep the superstar away from his detractors.
