Former Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz has withdrawn his name from consideration for U.S. President-elect Donald Trump‘s nomination for Attorney General, citing his confirmation process as a “distraction” to the Trump/Vance Transition.
Gaetz’s decision comes after facing intense scrutiny over allegations of sexual misconduct and a lengthy probe by a congressional ethics panel into possible sexual misconduct and drug use.
The Justice Department investigated Gaetz for nearly three years for potential sex trafficking violations, but no charges were brought.
Additionally, a woman testified to the House Ethics Committee that she had two sexual encounters with Gaetz when she was 17.
Gaetz denied all allegations, stating that Joe Biden’s Justice Department investigated him for sex trafficking but ultimately did not charge him.
However, the allegations are resurfacing and could complicate the Senate confirmation process, hence Gaetz’s decision to withdraw.
Reaction from Trump and Supporters
President-elect Trump appreciated Gaetz’s efforts and said he looks forward to his future endeavors. “Matt has a wonderful future, and I look forward to watching all the great things he will do!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Senator Lindsey Graham also showed support, believing Gaetz “will continue to contribute to our nation’s wellbeing for years to come.“
Following Gaetz’s withdrawal, Trump announced former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi as his new nominee for Attorney General.
Senate Republicans expressed relief, with Minority Leader Mitch McConnell stating, “I think that was appropriate.”
However, Senator John Fetterman suggested it was a tactical move, saying, “If you want to respond to absolute trolling, you know, then you got to pace yourself.”
