Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has arrived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to join other world leaders at the 19th G20 summit. The G20 is an informal body of the world’s twenty largest economies, including the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Russia, Canada, China, India, and Japan.

Although Nigeria is not a G20 member, it participates as a partner country because of its strategic geopolitical importance in Africa and its economic significance for global trade and commerce.

President Tinubu left Abuja last night after a meeting with the visiting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He is attending the summit at the invitation of the host, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

The summit, which takes place today and tomorrow, has the theme “Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet.

A statement from his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said the meetings will include representatives from the African Union and key international financial institutions.

The agenda includes discussions on combating global hunger and poverty, reforming international governance systems, and promoting sustainable development and energy transitions. These topics align with Nigeria’s advocacy for worldwide reform and its desire for a permanent United Nations Security Council seat.

President Tinubu is also expected to hold bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the summit to advance Nigeria’s socio-economic reform agenda.

The President is being accompanied by a high-level delegation, including Foreign Affairs Minister Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar; Minister of Livestock Development Idi Mukhtar Maiha; Minister of Art, Tourism, Culture, and Creative Economy Hannatu Musawa; Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security Dr. Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi; and the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ambassador Mohammed Mohammed.
