Three people tragically died in a plane crash in Slovenia on Sunday during a scenic flight that was supposed to be a birthday gift for one of the passengers.
When it crashed, the aircraft belonging to the Maribor Aeroclub was conducting a sightseeing flight in the Prekmurje region.
The victims included a man in his 30s from Beltinci and a woman from Styria – all in Slovenia. The identity of the third person has not been determined.
Initially intended for four passengers, one person reportedly chose to stay back. His decision saved his life.
The plane is an American single-engine aircraft, the Cessna 172 Skyhawk, which is used mainly for flight training. First flown in 1955, the Cessna 172 remains one of the most successful aircraft in history.
Vili Kolar from the Maribor Aviation Centre confirmed the aircraft’s ownership and noted the plane took off at 11 am.
Investigators believe weather conditions, particularly thick fog during a planned route from Maribor to Lendava, may have caused the accident.
Emergency services responded around noon on Sunday after a small part of the sports aircraft fell near a football field.

Due to the location of the crash, air traffic control could not provide immediate, definitive information about the crash. Authorities have launched an investigation.
