Federal Capital Territory to Crack Down on Unlicensed Taxis from Next Year – Minister

Starting next year, unregistered vehicles will no longer be allowed to operate as commercial taxis in Nigeria’s federal capital city, Abuja. Chief Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), announced this during a media briefing with several news organizations in Abuja on Wednesday, November 13.

The minister said that private individuals in Abuja will only be permitted to use their vehicles for taxi services with proper registration and adhering to the official Abuja taxi color scheme. This measure is to reduce incidents of “one chance” crimes.

The term “one chance” refers to a type of extortion crime where criminals masquerade as private vehicle operators, pick up unsuspecting passengers, and then rob them. Previously, civil servants and other individuals used their vehicles for commercial purposes to supplement their incomes.

Wike explained that when passengers board a registered vehicle from the bus or taxi terminals, it is easier for authorities to investigate when something goes wrong. However, if someone chooses to travel independently and takes risks on the road, that decision falls on them.

Wike Speaks

First, let us appreciate what we’re doing regarding utilizing bus terminals, which is commendable. We need to consider how to ensure its sustainability.” Wike said.

We have agreed that the government cannot solely rely on the private sector for transportation. While we welcome private sector participation, the government will provide the necessary infrastructure.

So how does this operate? We will bring private individuals to partner with the government to enhance efficiency.

With our current plans, when the bus terminals open in January or February, and people begin to apply to partner with the government for a more efficient operation, we cannot allow private individuals to run taxis without proper registration and the official Abuja color scheme.

This will help minimize incidents of ‘one chance.’ When travelers board vehicles at the bus and taxi terminals, the authorities know the vehicle and the driver. However, if you travel alone, you are taking a personal risk.”
