U.S. President-elect Donald Trump delivered a powerful message to his critics regarding his stance on women by appointing a woman to a significant position in his administration. Susie Wiles has been named Trump’s White House Chief of Staff – the first woman to hold such an influential position in the American government.
Wiles, a seasoned Republican strategist and daughter of legendary National Football League (NFL) broadcaster Pat Summerall. Wiles is said to have played a crucial role in Trump’s campaign victory over Vice President Kamala Harris.
As Trump’s right-hand woman, Wiles brings a wealth of experience, having worked on Ronald Reagan’s 1980 campaign and transforming politics in Florida. She’s known for her instrumental role in turning Rick Scott, a Floridian businessman with little political experience, into Florida’s governor in just seven months.
Who is Susie Wiles?
Wiles is a 67-year-old grandmother with a “traditional” political background. She emphasizes the importance of manners and etiquette and acknowledges the Republican Party’s evolution. “There are changes we must live with to get done the things we’re trying to do,” says Wiles.
She was the Co-chair of Trump’s Florida campaign in 2015 and helped secure victory for Trump in the state over Hillary Clinton in 2016
Trump described Ms Wiles as “tough, smart, innovative, and universally admired and respected.” As Chief of Staff, she’ll manage the White House, advise on policy issues, and oversee daily operations.
A White House Chief of Staff is often seen as the de facto vice president of America because of the enormous influence in both the policy direction and even sometimes in managing the private affairs of the President.
It is remarkable that in less than 48 hours of his electoral victory, Trump is already setting out his administration, which will come into place on inauguration day, January 20, 2025. This is what presidential preparedness looks like and should be a lesson to African and, more particularly, Nigerian presidents, including President Bola Tinubu, who often take months, even after swearing in, to appoint cabinet members.
