Since Donald Trump was announced as the winner of the US presidential election, world leaders have expressed their well wishes and congratulations.
In his victory speech, Trump thanked his supporters for the “extraordinary honor” of electing him the 47th president of the United States. “America has given us an unprecedented and powerful mandate. We have taken back control of the Senate—wow, that’s good,” he exclaimed.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among the first to congratulate Trump, tweeting, “Heartiest congratulations my friend Donald Trump on your historic election victory. As you build on the successes of your previous term, I look forward to renewing our collaboration further to strengthen the India-US Comprehensive Global and Strategic Partnership“.
Australian Prime Minister Antony Albanese congratulated Trump, saying, “Congratulations to President Donald Trump on his election victory. Australians and Americans are great friends and true allies. Working together, we can ensure the partnership between our nations and peoples remains strong into the future”.
Other leaders who congratulated Trump included Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who called Trump’s win “history’s greatest comeback,” and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who said he’s looking to strengthen US-Pakistan relations.
French President Emmanuel Macron and Italian leader Giorgia Meloni also extended their congratulations.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky congratulated Trump and expressed hopes for “strong bipartisan support for Ukraine in the United States.“
Former President George W. Bush congratulated Trump on winning a second term in office and Senator JD Vance on his election as vice president. Bush also thanked President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris for their public service.
Nigerian Leaders Congratulate
Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu also sent a congratulatory message. “Together, we can foster economic cooperation, promote peace, and address global challenges that affect our citizens,” the president said.
Nigeria’s former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, at 75, could be looking at Trump’s run and victory as inspiration for his own potential run for the Nigerian presidency in 2027.
Atiku described Trump’s victory as a “testament to resilience“, adding that it was “an inspiring parable of courage in the face of adversity.” Atiku stated that Trump’s narrative would serve as an enduring testament to the resilience and vitality of the democratic process.
Peter Obi, another opposition leader and presidential hopeful, seized on the moment too. He said Trump’s victory “will reinforce democracy worldwide and foster much-needed global peace.” Obi said he hopes that “The peaceful conduct of these U.S. elections, along with the efficient transmission and release of results, should serve as an example and an inspiration for us here in Nigeria to abandon outdated practices such as electoral malpractice, vote-buying, election violence, and network disruptions that continue to hinder our democratic process.“
The defeated Democratic candidate, Vice President Kamala Harris, had previously called Trump to congratulate him. A statement from her aide simply said the vice president discussed with the president-elect the “importance of a peaceful transfer of power and being a president for all Americans.“
As Vice President, she is also the Senate President and must preside over the ratification of the election result in the Senate in December during the Electoral College voting.
President Joe Biden also spoke with Trump. According to the White House, President Biden “expressed his commitment to ensuring a smooth transition and emphasized the importance of working to bring the country together” to the president-elect.
Path To Victory
Trump’s victory marks a significant milestone. He becomes the oldest president-elect in US history and the first president in over 130 years to win a non-consecutive second term. Republicans gained control of the Senate, while control of the House remains undetermined.

The President-elect will be sworn in on January 20, 2025.
Trump secured the White House with a decisive 292 electoral college votes. Harris garnered 226.
Trump won 50.98% of the popular vote, totaling 72,937,315 ballots in his favor; Harris, 67,990,411 votes, accounting for 47.52%. Trump won five swing states: Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. He also maintained leads in Arizona, 51.93%, and in Nevada, 51.59%, as of 10:50 pm Central African Time, the two states whose results have yet to be concluded.
Other world leaders to greet Trump include British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Turkish President Recep Erdogan, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and Polish President Andrzej Duda, who greeted Trump.
While Iran was tepid about Trump’s return to the White House having been warned by Trump during the campaign to “bomb the sh*t” out of them, China and Russia at least pledged cooperation with the President-elect.
