The Federal Capital Territory, Abuja Police Command recently carried out anti-robbery operations in the Jahi area of Abuja, in the process killing two alleged armed robbers and arresting four suspects.
The police operation was in response to a distress call. During the gunfight on October 21, the two robbers were killed, and Haruna Abdullahi, 32, and Yerima Usman, 28, were apprehended. Two more gang members, Abba Ismail and Ashiru Suleiman, were arrested shortly after.
Additionally, five car snatchers were arrested, and 13 stolen vehicles, including a blue Toyota Corolla, were recovered. The arrested suspects, Arji Thomas, Amobi Ndukwe, and Amaechi Sampson, are linked to a notorious car-snatching gang and have a history of previous convictions.
“It is important to note that Aji Thomas and Amobi Ndukwe are ex-convicts. During interrogation, they admitted to operating in Garki for the past year and a half, claiming responsibility for numerous car thefts within the metropolis,” said Tunji Disu, the FCT Commissioner of Police, while parading the suspects.
Furthermore, one Joseph Abang was arrested after receiving a stolen Honda Accord from a mechanic who absconded with a vehicle belonging to his client. During a search, two more suspected stolen vehicles were found with him. The mechanic is still at large.
The story suggests a growing menace of theft and robbery within the federal capital, but also a police force that is proactively responding.
