Tinubu Intervenes: Minors Involved in #EndBadGovernance Protests to be Released

In response to the public outrage following the arrest and arraignment of minors involved in the #EndBadGovernance protests across the nation in August, President Bola Tinubu ordered on Monday the immediate release of all the children.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, announced this to journalists at the State House on Monday after the President inaugurated seven newly appointed ministers approved by the Senate.

The minister said that the President mandated the immediate release of the minors without regard to any ongoing legal proceedings.

Additionally, the President instructed the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction to promptly attend to the needs of these minors and facilitate their reunification with their parents or guardians throughout the country.

Tinubu also ordered the establishment of a committee led by the Humanitarian Affairs Ministry to address all matters concerning the arrest, detention, treatment, and eventual release of the minors.

On Friday, November 1, 2024, there was widespread anger and disgust among Nigerians when police presented 72 minors in a Federal High Court in Abuja due to their involvement in the national #EndBadGovernance protests in August.

The minors, who faced charges such as treason, were detained in locations including Kaduna, Abuja, Gombe, Jos, Katsina, and Kano states. Some appeared malnourished and fainted in court.

Judge Obiora Egwuatu granted bail of N10 million to the 72 minors.

It will be recalled that several groups from Northern Nigeria, where most of the children were suspected to be picked from, issued statements to demand their release.
