The Nigerian food and drugs regulatory agency, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), has issued a public alert concerning the Nivea Roll-On deodorant. The European Union’s Rapid Alert System for Dangerous Non-Food Products (RAPEX) has recalled the specific product due to safety issues.
The product in question is the “Nivea Black & White Invisible Roll-On deodorant—50ml”. It is promoted as providing 48-hour protection in African climates and carries the batch number 93529610 and bar code number 42299882.
NAFDAC says the product, manufactured in Germany, was recalled by the European Union for containing 2-(4-tert-Butyl benzyl propionaldehyde) (BMHCA), “a chemical prohibited in cosmetics products due to its ability to cause harm to the reproductive system, impairs the health of an unborn child as well as skin irritation and burns to users.”
The agency has urged importers, distributors, and retailers to be cautious and vigilant along the supply chain to prevent the import, distribution, sale, and use of this specific Nivea Roll-On deodorant from the affected batch.
Consumers in possession of the products are advised to stop using them immediately. They or healthcare professionals should report any adverse reactions associated with using them and return the products to the nearest NAFDAC office.
