Nigeria Selects Hausa Film, “Mai Martaba” to Contend for Oscar at the 97th Academy Awards

Nigeria hopes to secure its first Oscar nomination by selecting the epic Hausa film “Mai Martaba” as its contender for the Best International Feature Film category at the 97th Academy Awards.

Prince Daniel directed and produced the feature film. “Mai Martaba” tells the story of an ancient African kingdom’s rise and fall, exploring themes of love, greed, and betrayal. Shot on location in Daura, Katsina State, the film showcases Northern Nigerian culture and boasts visual and technical appeal.

“The film was selected for its relevant theme of diverse voices in decision-making and inclusive leadership,” said Stephanie Linus, Chairperson of the Nigerian Official Selection Committee (NOSC). “It received the highest number of votes from our 15-member panel.”

This marks Nigeria’s third successful submission for the award, following “Lionheart” (2019) and “The Milkmaid” (2020). Although previous attempts faced hurdles, industry observers are optimistic about “Mai Martaba’s” chances this time around.

“Mai Martaba stands out for its historical depth and cinematic execution,” said film critic Victor Akande. “It’s a transformative tale that challenges conventions and celebrates female leadership.“

The Road to the Oscars

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) will announce a shortlist of 15 finalists on December 17, 2024, and the final five nominees on January 17, 2025. The 97th Oscars will take place on March 2, 2025, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California.

As Nigeria’s film industry continues to grow, “Mai Martaba’s” selection reflects the country’s increasing visibility on the global stage.

“We’re proud to showcase our diverse narratives and cultural richness,” said Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, veteran actress and NOSC member. “We hope ‘Mai Martaba’ will resonate with the Academy and bring home the Oscar.“
