The Imo State Police Command has reported that its counter-terrorism unit successfully thwarted an attack by unidentified individuals along the Owerri/Aba Road, near Owerri Airport, on Wednesday.
According to Henry Okoye, the command’s spokesperson, approximately ten attackers in two vehicles launched a violent assault but were “effectively countered by the unit, demonstrating notable bravery“.
In the ensuing gun battle, one suspect was neutralized, while the others fled with gunshot injuries, abandoning their vehicle, an ash-colored Mercedes Jeep with a Lagos State registration number.
The police confirmed no injuries or casualties among their personnel and recovered several firearms, including an AK-47 rifle, 15 rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition, and an IPOB/ESN flag. The police are still pursuing the attackers.
The command suspects the attack was carried out by members of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB/ESN), a separatist group advocating for the South East’s separation from Nigeria. The IPOB has repeatedly denied involvement in violent activities.
The police have urged healthcare providers to report individuals seeking treatment for gunshot injuries.
