Manchester United has sacked manager Erik ten Hag after two and a half years in charge, following a disappointing start to the 2024-25 season.
The Dutchman was informed of the decision by the club’s board on Monday morning, less than 24 hours after the team’s 2-1 defeat to West Ham at the London Stadium.
Ten Hag’s departure was anticipated, given United’s poor performance in the Premier League. The team currently sits 14th in the table, with just three wins from nine matches. Their Europa League campaign has also been lackluster, with the team ranked 21st out of 36.
In a statement, Manchester United expressed gratitude to Ten Hag for his contributions, which included winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024. “Erik ten Hag has left his role as Manchester United men’s first-team manager. We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future.“
Ten Hag’s position had been under scrutiny since last season, when United finished eighth in the Premier League, their worst finish since 1990. Despite rumors of potential replacements, including Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna and Thomas Tuchel, Ten Hag was given a one-year contract extension. The club will now likely pay an estimated £7 million in compensation.
Ruud van Nistelrooy, Ten Hag’s assistant since last summer, has been appointed as the interim manager. He will lead the team in Wednesday’s Carabao Cup match against Leicester City. Manchester United will now begin the search for a permanent successor to Ten Hag.
