The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested House of Representatives member Alex Ifeanyi Ikwechegh [APGA, Aba North/Aba South federal Constituency] for allegedly assaulting a Bolt driver in Abuja.
Police spokesperson Josephine Adeh confirmed that Ikwechegh is being questioned at the Maitama Police Station.
According to the Police Command, driver Stephen Abuwatseya reported the incident, stating that a dispute arose over the delivery method. During the altercation, Abuwatseya was reportedly physically assaulted. The incident occurred when Abuwatseya delivered a package to Ikwechegh.
The Police Command expressed concern over Ikwechegh’s attitude toward the office of the Inspector General of Police, indicating a disregard for law enforcement authority. After allegedly slapping the victim, Ikwechegh reportedly said, “You can go ahead and call the Inspector General of Police.“
Police Launch Investigation
FCT Commissioner of Police Olatunji Disu has ordered an investigation. In a statement, the FCT Police Command expressed concern over Hon. Ikwechegh’s dismissive attitude toward the Inspector General of Police when he purportedly boasted to the Bolt driver, “You can go ahead and call the Inspector General of Police,” demonstrating a troubling disregard for law enforcement authority.
The Command promised to conduct an impartial investigation and ensure justice for all in the case. It also assured that appropriate legal action would be taken upon completing the investigation.
A trending video online shows Mr. Ikwechegh allegedly berating and threatening Abuwatseya, resulting in widespread condemnation on social media regarding the alleged abuse of power. Human rights advocates have joined calls for accountability, urging the police to investigate and ensure justice is served thoroughly.
It is not the first time a Nigerian lawmaker has been involved in a controversy surrounding abuse of power; In 2019, Senator Elisha Abbo, then representing Adamawa North, assaulted a woman in what is known as the Sex-toy shop scandal. He was later ordered to pay compensation to her to the tune of N50m by an Abuja High Court.
