A social media account linked to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was suspended by platform X on Monday, October 28, 2024.
The account, which posted messages in Hebrew, was taken down with a notice stating that X suspends accounts that violate its rules, although it did not specify which rule was violated.
The suspension follows Israel’s recent attack on Iran over the weekend, which is the first time Israel has directly struck Iranian targets.

Israel claims that the airstrikes on Iranian military sites on Saturday were retaliation for Tehran’s missile attack on October 1. At least four Iranian soldiers were reported killed, but Iran asserts that the strikes caused limited damage.
In response, Khamenei stated that the Israeli strikes should neither be exaggerated nor minimized. While he did not explicitly order an immediate retaliation, officials from his government promised there would be a “measured” response. This incident has helped escalate tensions in the Middle East.
The Account’s Activities
The suspended account was launched just a day before, on Sunday, October 27, with a message in Hebrew simply reading, “In the name of God, the most merciful,” which is a standard Islamic greeting.
Khamenei’s office manages multiple accounts on X that broadcast messages in various languages. A corresponding message on his English account mocked “the Zionists” – term often used by detractors to describe Israel’s government, for underestimating Iran’s power and determination.
Previous Suspensions
This is not the first time Khamenei’s social media accounts has been suspended. In February, Meta removed his Facebook and Instagram accounts due to his support for Hamas following the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel.
Western social media platforms like X and Facebook are blocked in Iran, which leaves Iranians with the only option of using virtual private networks (VPNs) to access them.
