Nigeria’s leading airline, Air Peace, celebrated its 10th anniversary with a grand event at the Eko Convention Centre in Lagos on Saturday, October 26. Prominent personalities from Nigeria and beyond, including government officials, business leaders, and entertainment personalities, attended the celebration.
In his keynote address, Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, praised Air Peace’s accomplishments and the airline’s ability to sustain operations despite a challenging industry with a notorious high mortality rate. “If you look at the history of airlines in Nigeria, it’s rare for any of them to survive more than 10 years while still appearing healthy,” Keyamo said.
He also stressed the Nigerian government’s commitment to supporting domestic airlines and announced an upcoming meeting with global aircraft financiers and lessors in Ireland in January 2025. “We’re on the right path, thanks to individuals like Allen Onyema,” he added.
Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State, a guest of honor at the event, lauded Air Peace Chairman Allen Onyema for his dedication to Nigerian aviation and nation-building, describing him as “an amazing Nigerian.” “Air travel is not a luxury; it’s a necessity,” Obaseki stated, commending the airline’s exceptional safety record.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, represented by Transportation Minister Sen. Sa’id Alkali, praised Air Peace’s resilience. “The aviation industry globally has faced turbulent times… Yet, Air Peace has weathered these storms, demonstrating exceptional strength,” Shettima noted.
Vote of Thanks
Mr. Onyema took to the podium to thank the government for its support and urged Nigerians to shift the negative narrative surrounding the country. “If I commend President Tinubu for improving the ease of doing business in Nigeria, then you can trust that I am speaking the truth,” Onyema declared.
He singled out the aviation minister for praise and said his time in the position has brought on a “positive revolution” simply because he had no “entrenched interest” besides getting the job done.
“Whether you like to hear it or not, there is evidence that this man has given it his all. Many of you might not know some of the things that have been causing the high mortality rate of airlines in Nigeria. We have a minister who listens. He is one who was never given a little opportunity to succeed. He surprised all of us,” the Air Peace boss remarked.
The event also featured award presentations to long-serving employees, trade partners, and loyal customers—performances from top Nigerian artists, including Davido, Flavour, and Efezino, entertained guests.
