Vice President Kashim Shettima‘s trip to Samoa to represent Nigeria at the 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Summit has been canceled due to unforeseen circumstances.
During a stopover at JFK Airport in New York, “The foreign object damaged the cockpit windscreen of the plane,” making it unfit for travel, according to a presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga.
“President Tinubu, acting promptly, has approved a ministerial delegation to represent Nigeria at the summit in the Samoa capital of Apia while the plane’s repair has commenced,” he said in a statement he released.
Vice President Shettima and Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar have since departed New York for Nigeria, and repairs on the plane have begun.
This delegation, led by Minister of Environment Balarabe Abass Lawal, will ensure that Nigeria’s interests are adequately represented at the high-level meeting.
The 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) began on October 21 and will conclude on October 26 in Apia, Samoa. This gathering brings together leaders from 56 member countries to address pressing global challenges and foster cooperation.
This year’s summit theme, “One Resilient Common Future: Transforming our Common Wealth,” highlights the need for collective resilience and collaboration.
The CHOGM summit is expected to tackle critical issues related to global economics, environmental concerns, and security challenges.
The outcomes of CHOGM 2024 will shape the Commonwealth’s agenda for the coming years, making Nigeria’s participation in this delegation necessary.
