MainPower Takes Over Electricity Distribution in Enugu State From EEDC

The newly established Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC) has licensed a new power company, MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited, to distribute electricity in Enugu State.

This marks the end of Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) operations in the state, which were regulated by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), which is based in Abuja.

MainPower effectively takes over electricity distribution in Enugu State, while EEDC will continue to operate in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, and Imo states.

This development follows President Bola Tinubu‘s signing of the Nigerian Electricity Act Amendment 2024 on February 9, 2024. The amended law now allows states to generate, transmit, and distribute electricity. States are required to establish their regulatory frameworks and issue operating licenses to potential investors.

MainPower received its interim distribution license from EERC’s Chairman/CEO, Mr. Chijioke Okonkwo on Tuesday.

A member of MainPower’s board of directors, Mr. Kester Enwereonu, who received the license on behalf of his company, said this transition is a new chapter in the power sector, with MainPower leading the way.

This is a bold step towards building a better future for Enugu State. With the regulatory oversight of the EERC, our commitment to operational excellence, and the support of our stakeholders, we are confident that MainPower will achieve the tangible improvements that our customers deserve,” Enwereonu assured.

He promised MainPower would improve services by “utilizing cutting-edge technology, reengineered processes, and data-driven insights” and that the company would focus on building a reliable distribution network that would provide uninterrupted power to homes and businesses across the state.
