Rivers State Commissioner for Environment, Tambari Sydney Gbara, has reaffirmed his support for Governor Siminialayi Fubara, stating that nothing will force him to leave office.
Gbara, the state’s immediate former publicity secretary for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), expressed confidence that Fubara will serve out his eight-year term and be succeeded in 2031.
Gbara’s remarks came amid rising tensions between Fubara’s team and that of his predecessor, Chief Nyesom Wike. In a Facebook statement, Gbara compared the situation to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, saying Fubara’s humility had been mistaken for weakness.
“They mistook your humility for weakness, they thought that they would kick you out of office in three weeks, just as Russia thought of Ukraine,” Gbara said.
Fubara Vows To Protect Democracy
Gov. Fubara himself in a recent speech at the 2024/2025 Legal Year and Re-Dedication Service, vowed to defend the course of justice in the state with his last breath. In a subtle dig at the strong arm tactic of his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, Fubara said it was more important for the nation to emphasize institutional strength over and above individual strength.
“What we are praying for in this country is institutional strength and not individual strength,” Fubara said. “Institutional strength is the only thing that will bring development in this country.“
The governor applauded the Rivers State Judiciary, particularly the High Court Divisions, for their support and urged the judges to remain resolute in their commitment to truth and justice.
“I want to thank the Rivers State Judiciary… for keeping this administration afloat up until this hour,” Fubara said.
The governor said he was aware that some of the judges had “been threatened by way of phone calls and even physical assaults….and threatened professionally through petitions that are fake and frivolous“.
“But you must understand that you must be persecuted when doing the right thing. And those of you doing the right thing that is being fought from all sides, be courageous. Very soon, this whole thing will be over. Nothing lasts forever,” the governor told them.
In his sermon, Bishop Rt. Rev. Wisdom Budu Ihunwo warned that conflicting judgments from courts of coordinate jurisdiction were skewing leadership and jeopardizing national unity and stability.
