Presidency Denies Plot to Remove Senate President Godswill Akpabio

The Nigerian Presidency has shut down rumors of an orchestrated plot to remove Senator Godswill Akpabio as President of the Senate.

The Presidential Adviser on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Senator Basheer Lado, clarified this in a statement on Wednesday, following reports that security agents had been deployed to the National Assembly complex to prevent an alleged move by some senators to impeach Akpabio.

Senator Lado said that the Presidency is committed to maintaining a harmonious relationship with the parliament and assured Nigerians that the legislature would function freely without undue interference from the executive arm of government.

The attention of this office has been drawn to online reports that security agents have been deployed to prevent senators from carrying out their legislative duties, specifically in relation to an alleged impeachment of the Senate President. I wish to categorically state that these reports are baseless and should be disregarded as there is no discord within the rank and file of the senators,” Lado stated.

Senate spokesperson, Senator Yemi Adaramodu, also dispelled the impeachment rumors, describing them as “unacceptable and unspeakable.” He said there were no reasons or justifications to speculate about a change in leadership. “There is nothing near that, and there will not be. We have agreed that this is an uncommon Senate, and the Senate President is carrying out his legislative duties,” Adaramodu said.

Abdulaziz Yar’Adua, chairman of the Northern Senators Forum (NSF), dismissed any attempts to link northern lawmakers with the issue, saying that the group is solidly behind Akpabio’s leadership.

We are here to assure Nigerians that they should ignore the rumor and concentrate on issues that affect our nation rather than dwelling on rumors,” Yar’Adua told Senate correspondents.
