African defense ministers are convening in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, for a three-day conference on enhancing continental security cooperation.
The event, themed “Africa: United in Peace, Strong in Security,” brings together representatives from regional organizations, senior military officers, and security experts.on
According to Ethiopia’s Defense Minister, Aisha Mohammed Mussa, “Africa’s security situation has become increasingly complex.” She emphasized the need for collective resilience in the face of diverse security threats, including terrorism, insurgencies, and human trafficking.
The conference seeks to strengthen military partnerships among African nations to combat rising security challenges. Babatunde Abayomi Taiwo, Head of the AU’s Political Affairs and Counterterrorism Directorate, warned that rising tensions between governments could undermine joint efforts to address conflicts.
As the conference progresses, defense ministers are expected to explore new security partnerships, expand the scope of military cooperation, and solidify a unified defense network.
The event is also seen as a platform for advancing the African Union’s Agenda 2063, a long-term strategic framework for transforming Africa into a global power by addressing current security, political, and economic challenges.
The security conference is timely, given the escalating tensions in the Horn of Africa, particularly between Ethiopia and Somalia. Somalia’s Defense Minister and Chief of Staff were notably absent amid strained relations following Ethiopia’s recent maritime agreement with Somaliland, the tiny nation that Somalia claims is part of its territory.
