Ogun State Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun has approved a minimum wage of N77,000 for the lowest-paid workers in the state, effective immediately. This is N7,000 above the national minimum wage recently enacted into law.
This decision was revealed after a meeting between the state government and the leadership of the Organized Labour in Ogun State, comprising the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and the Joint Negotiating Council (JNC).
“The governor has directed that no worker in the state should earn less than N77,000 starting from October,” said Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Tokunbo Talabi.
State NLC Chairman Comrade Hameed Benco praised the governor, observing that Ogun State’s minimum wage is the highest in the country. “Some states are paying N70,000, N70,250 or less, but Ogun State is leading the pack.“
The governor has also advised the private sector to adopt a similar minimum wage and has set up a monitoring team to ensure compliance.
