Poultry Association Sounds Alarm For Govt Action To Prevent Egg Costs Soaring

The Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN) warns that egg prices may double from N5,500 to N10,000 per crate without urgent government support for poultry farmers.

Rising transportation costs due to fuel subsidy removal and increased feed prices are driving prices higher, according to Musa Hakeem, PAN’s FCT Chapter Secretary.

Hakeem called for a state of emergency on egg production, citing declining protein intake and the need for government intervention. “Nigerians cannot afford to depend on imported eggs,” he stressed.

PAN also criticized the lack of government support, with the last government grain intervention occurring three years ago. Grains are the primary ingredient of poultry feed. The association urged the government to collaborate with them in accessing bank financing and ending feed millers’ indiscriminate price increases.

In Nigeria, eggs are not only a protein source in many meals, especially for children, but also an essential component in food and beverage production. An increased price of eggs could raise the prices of these products beyond the reach of more Nigerians.
