Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the recent fuel price hike while the President was away on vacation.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) raised fuel prices from N855 per liter to well over N1,000 in some regions. The government’s alibi was that the increase was the decision of NNPC – the state oil company.

But Obi wasn’t buying that. In a series of posts via his X account on Saturday, Obi condemned the hike as “avoidable,” “unfortunate and insensitive,” and worse of all, it occurred “without providing any explanation” to the country. He cited the negative economic impact, this “draconian measure” was having on poor citizens.

He questioned the regulatory framework and the role of the President, who also serves as the Minister of Petroleum Resources.

The opposition leader urged the president to explain to Nigerians the rationale for the increase, offer alternatives, and reverse the price hike. He asked the president to always act in Nigerians’ best interests.
