The crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has taken a dramatic turn, with a faction of the National Working Committee (NWC) suspending the acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, and National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, over allegations of disloyalty.
In a statement, Debo Ologunagba, the National Publicity Secretary, declared that Damagum and Anyanwu’s suspension was due to their “anti-party activity” regarding a court case involving 27 former members of the Rivers State House of Assembly who defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
“The NWC condemned this anti-party activity of the Acting National Chairman and the National Secretary, which is in gross violation of the provisions of the PDP Constitution,” Ologunagba stated.
This development follows earlier suspensions announced by Damagum’s faction, targeting Ologunagba and National Legal Adviser Kamaldeen Ajibade for similar allegations of disloyalty.
In response to the suspension, the NWC appointed Yayari Ahmed, the party’s Treasurer, Acting National Chairman. According to Ologunagba, this appointment is “pursuant to the provisions of the Constitution of the PDP (as amended in 2017)“.
The internal power struggle indicates an opposition party in crisis, giving President Bola Tinubu‘s ruling APC a field day without opposition to its policies. Concerned party members and democrats are urging the party to put its house in order ahead of the make-or-break National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for October 24.
