AFCON 2025 Qualifier: Dele-Bashiru’s Late Strike Seals Super Eagles’ Win Over Libya

The Super Eagles of Nigeria secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Libya in their Africa Cup of Nations qualifier match on Friday, October 11, 2024. Fisayo Dele-Bashiru’s late goal in the 87th minute proved to be the decisive factor in the match.

Nigeria dominated the game from the start, but struggled to break down Libya’s resilient defense. Despite having a strong offensive lineup, the Super Eagles failed to score in the first half.

Coach Augustine Eguavoen made tactical changes, bringing in Raphael Onyedika, Samuel Chukwueze, Taiwo Awoniyi, and Dele-Bashiru to inject pace into the game.

The substitutions paid off when Dele-Bashiru scored the winner, side-footing Moses Simon’s cross into the goal.

“We knew it was going to be a tough game, but we showed character and determination,” Eguavoen said. “Dele-Bashiru’s goal was a testament to his hard work and dedication.”

The win maintains Nigeria’s top spot in Group D with seven points from three matches. A victory in the return leg against Libya on Tuesday would ensure the Super Eagles’ early qualification for the 2025 AFCON finals in Morocco.

Nigerians have taken to social media to praise Dele-Bashiru, drawing comparisons to legendary midfielder Jay-Jay Okocha. Dele-Bashiru’s goal was his second for the national team, following his equalizer against South Africa in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier.

Moses Simon impressed with his dribbling skills, providing the assist for Dele-Bashiru’s goal. Alex Iwobi, however, struggled to make an impact, missing several scoring opportunities.

Victor Boniface’s lackluster performance has raised concerns, with some calling for Taiwo Awoniyi to replace him in the starting lineup.
