Voters in Plateau State, north-central Nigeria, are heading to voting centers today across the 17 Local Government Areas to elect new Council Chairmen and Councillors who will manage the affairs of their areas for the next two years.
This is part of the ongoing democratization of the local governments – the last tier of government in the Nigerian Federation.
It will be recalled that Governor Caleb Mutfwang dismissed the elected chairmen and councilors upon assuming office and swore in transition implementation committee chairmen on June 10, 2023.
On September 7, 2024, the transition implementation committee chairmen were dissolved, and directors of personnel took over to pave the way for today’s elections, which are being held on Wednesday, October 9.
At least eleven political parties are participating in this election.
The Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission indicated that 75 candidates are contesting the chairmanship positions, while 788 candidates are vying for the councillorship seats in the 355 wards across the eleven parties.
The state electoral body is introducing a voter verification system for manual accreditation of voters across the 4,989 polling units to enhance the efficiency of the council elections.
Chairman of the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission, Daniel Cishak, emphasized the electoral body’s commitment to organizing credible and fair elections.
“This election is unique, as we have consistently adhered to our timelines—except for one postponement regarding election guidelines during the nationwide protests,” the chairman said.
