The Ogun State Government has commenced renovations and refurbishments of two key stadiums in the state: the MKO Abiola International Stadium and the Alake Sports Centre preparatory to the 2025 National Sports Festival, tagged Gateway Games, scheduled to take place from January 16-25 next year.
During a recent media briefing following an inspection of the venues, Ogun State’s Commissioner for Sports Development, Wasiu Isiaka, assured the public that all renovation works would be completed well before the commencement of the games. “We are committed to delivering top-notch facilities that will not only meet but exceed national standards,” Isiaka stated.
He said the renovation plans are ambitious and comprehensive and that “There will be a swimming pool, tennis courts, and handball courts. The tartan tracks are currently being replaced to ensure they are in prime condition for the athletes.”
The Commissioner further clarified that the seating capacity, particularly in the VIP section, would be expanded, and the swimming pool would be strategically located behind the football pitch.
“Our goal is to create a sustainable framework for discovering and nurturing talents, providing them with opportunities to compete at the highest levels,” he said.
The sports festival is expected to draw top athletes from across the country. The should not only serve as a platform for competition but also as a celebration of Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage and its unity in diversity.
“We are fully prepared to host a world-class festival with facilities that will attract both future national and international events,” Mr. Ishaka boasted. He also called on the corporate community to pitch in and support the project.
