Senator Nenadi Usman, Chairman of the Labour Party Caretaker Committee, has announced the party’s decision to appeal a federal high court judgment that reaffirmed Julius Abure as the party’s substantive Chairman.
Mrs Usman’s announcement followed a high-level meeting this evening with key party figures, including His Excellency Mr. Peter Obi, the last presidential candidate, Governor Alex Otti of Abia State, and Senator Darlington Nwokocha, Secretary of the LP Caretaker Committee.
During the meeting, the leaders deliberated on the judgment passed earlier in the day. Senator Usman clarified that the case in question preceded the formation of the Caretaker Committee. However, after receiving a comprehensive briefing, the committee resolved to join the case and pursue an appeal.
“I, therefore, call on all party members to remain calm and maintain peace as we continue our reconciliation efforts,” she stated.
The party elder’s decision to appeal rather than follow a path of internal reconciliations indicates that Labour Party – considered a third option in contemporary Nigerian politics is far from stable viable alternative to the big two traditional parties.
