Nigeria and Brazil are set to strengthen their economic and cultural ties with the impending launch of direct flights between the two nations. Festus Keyamo, Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, and Carlos Garcete, Brazil’s Ambassador to Nigeria, have initiated talks to implement the Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA).
This development follows a Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2018, aiming to enhance aviation connectivity and economic cooperation. The discussions are also a result of the meeting between President Bola Tinubu and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Addis Ababa in February 2024, where they acknowledged the cultural and economic links between the two countries.
Ambassador Garcete highlighted the potential for immediate commencement of flight services, noting that both nations could facilitate four to five flights per week. “The introduction of direct flights will spark significant economic growth between our countries,” he stated. However, he also emphasized the need to finalize the Open Skies Agreement to fully enable the proposed flights.
Keyamo expressed optimism about the potential economic impact of the BASA, stating, “There are numerous similarities between Nigeria and Brazil, and the activation of these flights will not only enhance trade but also strengthen cultural and social exchanges“
To ensure a smooth implementation, both countries have agreed to establish committees to draft and finalize new BASA arrangements. The ambassador also invited Keyamo to visit Brazil for the formal signing of the agreement, marking a significant milestone in Nigeria-Brazil relations.
