The outstanding Local Government election in Rivers State held on October 5 has been announced. Uzodimma Nwafor of the Action Alliance (AA) has been declared the winner of the Chairmanship of Etche Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The Chairman of the Rivers State Independent National Electoral Commission (RSIEC), Justice Adolphus Enebeli (Rtd), made the declaration on Sunday in Port Harcourt, the state capital.

The election retains the Action People’s Party (APP) as the decisive winner, clinching all 23 LGAs except Etche, which now goes to AA. However, APP also clinched all 19 councillorship positions in Etche LGA, forcing Nwafor to work with an APP-dominated house of councilors.

Giving a breakdown of the entire councillorship election in the state, the electoral body said the APP raked in 314 seats, the All Progressives Congress (APC) – 1, Boot – 1, Labour Party – 1, Social Democratic Party (SDP) – 1, and Young Progressives Party (YPP) – 1.

Immediate Swearing-in

Meanwhile, Governor Siminalayi Fubara is reportedly proceeding to inaugurate the newly elected council chairmen of the 23 local government areas this Sunday, just 24 hours after their victory at the polls.

The exercise will be held at the Executive Council Chambers of the Government House in Port Harcourt, the state capital.

RSIEC is on overdrive and proceeding with issuing certificates of return to the newly elected officials. Thereafter, the governor will swear them in.

Analysts believe the governor is moving at neck-break speed to forestall any possibility of judicial or other interventions and to establish a new set of facts on the ground, with the new Chairmen taking full control of the government of these area councils.

With a decisive victory handed over to Governor Fubara by the successful completion of this election, the governor is moving to immediately consolidate power and restore his constitutional control over the state, unchallenged by anti-democratic forces.
