Arsenal rallied from a 1-0 deficit to defeat Southampton 3-1 in the English Premier League at Emirates Stadium this Saturday, October 5, thanks to Bukayo Saka’s outstanding performance and goals from Kai Havertz and Gabriel Martinelli.
The Saints threatened an upset when Cameron Archer scored shortly after halftime, but Saka sparked Arsenal’s resurgence. He stole possession and assisted Havertz’s equalizer, then provided a brilliant pass for Martinelli’s go-ahead goal and sealed the win with a strike of his own.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta hailed Saka’s “incredible” reaction, praising his maturity and ability to change games. “He believes in his capacity to decide games and wants to be at the top,” Arteta said. Saka’s pair of assists took him to seven in the Premier League this season, the highest tally.
Saka’s influence was pivotal, as he attempted seven shots and created seven chances. His goal removed any jeopardy from the final minutes, following a similarly important strike in Tuesday’s Champions League win over Paris Saint-Germain. This was another outstanding display from the 23-year-old, who continues to be the player Arsenal looks to in difficult moments.
Tyler Dibling, 18, continued to impress for Southampton, producing some of the team’s best attacking moments. His quality shone through, and a bright future awaits.
The victory marked Arsenal’s 400th home Premier League win, with the team remaining one point behind leaders Liverpool. Southampton’s wait for a first win continues, despite an improved showing.
Arteta reflected on the game, saying, “The first half was exceptional, with dominance in areas and chances created. It’s unbelievable we didn’t score. Then we started the second half sloppy, and they scored. But the team reacted incredibly well, with composure and clarity.“
Southampton manager Russell Martin acknowledged his team’s growth, saying, “We had some big moments. We hit the bar, hit the post, scored a good goal, but weren’t in front for long enough. That’s the frustration.“
Arsenal now looks ahead to their next match against Liverpool on October 20, while Southampton hosts Bournemouth on the same day.
