APC Sweeps Benue Local Government Elections, Wins All Chairmanship and Councillorship Seats

Governor Hyacinth Alia’s All Progressives Congress (APC) has won all 23 Local Government Area chairmanship positions and 276 councillorship seats in Benue State. This is unlike in Rivers State where opposition parties got at least one Chairmanship position and four councillors.

The elections, held on Saturday, were organized by the Benue State Independent Electoral Commission (BSIEC).

On Sunday morning, BSIEC Chairman Richard Tombowua announced the results at the commission’s headquarters in Makurdi. He confirmed that the APC dominated the polls, which saw participation from five political parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Social Democratic Party (SDP), Labour Party (LP), and All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

Although eight parties showed interest, only five remained active in the election process. Tombowua praised the peaceful conduct of the elections, describing them as “free, fair, and credible.” He said apart from a minor incident in Otukpo, where a BSIEC official was briefly held hostage, the process was largely smooth. Swift intervention by security forces ensured the official’s safe return.

Tombowua attributed the delay in announcing the results to logistical challenges related to the vast distances involved in vote collation across the state. Nonetheless, he assured that BSIEC met its mandate of organizing a transparent and peaceful election.

Reacting to the outcome, the State Chairman of the Labour Party and the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Ibrahim Idoko, commended the electoral body for its role in ensuring a credible election. Similarly, APC State Chairman Benjamin Omale expressed his appreciation to BSIEC and lauded Governor Hyacinth Alia for providing a level playing field throughout the process.

The victorious candidates are expected to receive their certificates of return from BSIEC later on Sunday.
