Milutin Osmajic, a forward for Preston North End, has been handed an eight-match suspension and fined £15,000 after biting Blackburn Rovers defender Owen Beck during a Sky Bet Championship match. The incident occurred during the 0-0 draw at Deepdale on September 22.
Osmajic, an international player for Montenegro, bit Beck on the shoulder. However, he did not receive a red card at the time because referee Matt Donohue did not witness the incident. The Football Association (FA) found Osmajic guilty of violent conduct on October 4, resulting in a significantly longer ban due to the severity of the offense.
In a statement issued on Friday morning, the FA said: “Preston North End’s Milutin Osmajic has been given an eight-match suspension and £15,000 fine for misconduct during their match against Blackburn Rovers in the EFL Championship on Sunday, September 22. The forward admitted that he committed an act of violent conduct around the 87th minute by biting an opponent. An independent Regulatory Commission imposed his sanctions following a hearing. Its written reasons will be published in due course.“
Preston North End acknowledged the decision, stating they would provide no further comment until the written reasons are published.
The incident escalated after Beck kicked Preston’s Duane Holmes, leading to Beck’s dismissal by referee Donohue. Beck received a three-match ban for his violent behavior and has already missed Blackburn’s matches against Coventry City and Queens Park Rangers.
This biting incident is reminiscent of previous high-profile cases in football. In 2013, Luis Suarez received a ten-match ban for biting Branislav Ivanovic, and Eric Cantona was banned for nine months in 1995 for a kung-fu kick on a fan.
