Nigeria has joined a long list of foreign governments evacuating their citizens from the troubled Lebanon given the escalating conflict between the country and Israel.
The Nigerian government announced on Friday it has commenced arrangements for the evacuation of Nigerians living in Lebanon who are willing to return home at this time.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) revealed in a statement that, following the government’s decision, a multi-stakeholder meeting was convened. During this meeting, briefs were received on the condition of Nigerians in Lebanon and the preparations by various agencies to ensure the success of the evacuation exercise.
NEMA stated, “The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) is coordinating the evacuation, which has begun with the mobilization of citizens and will be followed immediately by all necessary requirements to bring them home.”
A leader of the Nigerian community in Lebanon, acknowledged the support of the Nigerian Mission in Lebanon, particularly in ensuring the safe movement of Nigerians out of high-risk areas. He added that no Nigerian lives have been lost so far.
In light of the planned voluntary evacuation, Nigerians willing to return home are advised to report to the Embassy in Beirut, where they will be profiled for the airlift.
Yesterday, the Russian government airlifted its diplomats and family members out of the country. Israeli shelling pounded much of southern Lebanon again this Friday with reported heavy casualties.
