Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has granted clemency to 117 convicts in celebration of Nigeria’s 64th Independence anniversary. According to his Chief Press Secretary, Ebenezer Adeniyan, the move is part of the governor’s effort to “reform the lives of those affected”, and give them a second chance.

Following recommendations from the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, 19 convicts will be released outright, while others on death row will have their sentences commuted to life imprisonment. Several inmates will also see their sentences reduced.

State Attorney General Dr. Olukayode Ajulo noted that the “compassionate gesture” aligns with the 1999 Constitution and is aimed at decongesting prisons and reforming the justice system.

The changes take effect on October 1, 2024.
