Boat Tragedy in Niger State: Over 150 Rescued, Dozens Still Missing as Rescue Efforts Continue

A tragic boat accident occurred on the River Niger in Niger State, leaving many passengers missing. The vessel, carrying about 300 people, mostly women and children, was en route to Gbajibo in Mokwa Local Government Area for a Maulid celebration when it capsized. The boat had departed from Mundi Community and was sailing upstream near the Jebba dam.

Hussaini Ibrahim, spokesperson for the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), confirmed that over 150 passengers have been rescued so far. However, many remain unaccounted for, raising fears of a significant loss of life.

A coordinated rescue operation involving NSEMA, the Niger State Ministry of Transport, Mokwa Local Government Emergency Committee, local divers, and community volunteers is underway. The team is working around the clock to find survivors and account for the missing.

Local divers, familiar with the river, have been instrumental in the ongoing search efforts. While the cause of the accident is still unknown, authorities have launched an investigation.

The Niger State government has urged residents to stay calm and cooperate with the rescue operation.
