President Bola Tinubu has officially sworn in Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) at a ceremony held Monday, September 30, at the Council Chamber of the State House in Abuja.
Mrs Kekere-Ekun becomes the 23rd Chief Justice of Nigeria and the second woman to ever hold the esteemed position, after Justice Alooma Mukhtar.
The swearing-in ceremony was attended by high government officials, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, and several key ministers such as Minister of Information Muhammed Idris, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike, Minister of Justice Lateef Fagbemi, and Minister of Special Duties Zephaniah Jisalo.
Justice Kekere-Ekun, who replaces the recently retired Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, had previously been serving as the Acting CJN following Ariwoola’s retirement in August. Her appointment was confirmed by the Nigerian Senate after a screening process.
The new CJN has had an illustrious career on the bench, having served as a Justice of the Supreme Court since 2013, where she has been part of presiding judges in controversial cases including the Imo State governorship election of 2019 which went in favor of Gov. Hope Uzodinma.
With her confirmation, Justice Kekere-Ekun is now expected to carry out the reforms she now espouses including strengthening the rule of law and restoring public confidence in the justice system.
