Manchester United has continued to perform inconsistently in the English Premier League, with the latest abysmal performance at home.

Goals from Brennan Johnson, Dean Kulusevski, and Dominic Solanke ensured a clean sweep with their goals and three points for Ange Postecoglou.

Erik Ten Hag fielded a changed XI, with Alehandro Garnacho starting on the right, Manuel Ugarte getting a first league start coupled with the return of Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo to the starting lineup, both of who were left out from Wednesday’s game against FC Twente.

Ange Postecoglou also set out a changed side, with Son Heung Min out due to a knock and Timo Werner coming into the side for him.

Micky van de Ven going for the first goal against United

The contest kicked off with the opening proceedings dominated by Spurs, and they did find the opener when an overhit pass from Marcus Rashford found Micky van der Ven in the Spurs half, with the Spurs defender racing through United’s midfield and making a teasing cross for Brennan Johnson, who tapped it in at the 3rd minute after being left unmarked at the far post.

The proceedings still did not take a turn for the good in favor of United, as a particularly hasty tackle from the Man United captain Bruno Fernandes saw him see red in the 42nd minute, leaving United with ten men.

Spurs came into the second half and replicated what was done in the first, with Dejan Kulusevski scoring in the second minute of the half following a fast break.

Dominic Solanke added a third for the away side, who ran riot in a match quite similar to the 6-1 thumping four years ago.

United now sit 12th with seven points with Aston Villa to face next in the league, with Spurs climbing the table to 8th place.

Analysis

Manchester United’s season has been marked by poor form and inconsistency, with injuries, suspensions, and a lack of cohesion hindering their progress. The team’s defensive frailties and misfiring attack have left them vulnerable, with only seven goals scored and nine conceded in their opening six league games. This defeat adds to growing criticism of Ten Hag’s tactics and squad rotation, with questions being raised about the team’s leadership and the decision to field players out of position.

Spurs, on the other hand, continues to impress under Ange Postecoglou, whose attacking philosophy is beginning to take shape. The arrival of Timo Werner and the return of Kulusevski have added dynamism to the Spurs attack, despite the absence of key players like Son Heung-min. With Liverpool and Arsenal maintaining early form, Tottenham aims to secure European football next season.

Manchester United faces Aston Villa, another good-form side, while Spurs are steadily climbing the Premier League. The pressure is on at Old Trafford, and unless results improve, the season may slip further out of reach for the Red Devils.
