Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening international partnerships and deepening relations with the Organisation of African, Caribbean, and Pacific States (OACPS) during the 79th UN General Assembly. Vice President Kashim Shettima, representing President Bola Tinubu, emphasized solidarity among member states amid global challenges and reiterated Nigeria’s dedication to OACPS goals.

Shettima said “Nigeria remains a principal partner of OACPS, championing our shared values of democracy, diaspora engagement, and development.” He addressed Nigeria’s inclusion on a high-risk jurisdiction list for anti-money laundering, aiming to engage in constructive dialogue with international partners.

The Vice President reaffirmed support for OACPS initiatives, including Haiti’s crisis, and acknowledged Kenya’s contribution of 400 troops. He emphasized Nigeria’s historical role in South-South cooperation, citing the technical aid corps program that sends teachers and doctors to the Caribbean.

Shettima outlined Nigeria’s strategy to leverage its position as Africa’s most populous nation to advocate for OACPS interests.

“We’re representing Nigeria’s interests while also championing the collective voice of the OACPS. President Tinubu’s vision for Nigeria aligns closely with the OACPS agenda. In today’s interconnected world, our success is intertwined with that of our partner nations,” he told OACPS members in the meeting.

Secretary-General, Georges Rebelo Pinto Chikoti, praised Nigeria as a key OACPS member and expressed gratitude for its contributions. He advocated the importance of strengthening partnerships between OACPS member states and the European Union, focusing on environment, infrastructure, education, and business development.
