As Nigeria’s economic, and security situation deteriorates, Nigerians who can afford it appear to be leaving the country in droves. The latest is the Nigerian R&B star, Bankole Wellington, widely known as Banky W.
Banky W – a recent cancer survivor, has announced his relocation to the United States with his family.
He revealed the move on his Instagram page, saying he was relocating to pursue a Master’s degree at Georgetown University in Washington, DC.

Alongside a photo of himself, his wife, actress Adesua Etomi-Wellington, and their child at the airport, Banky W sent his wishes to his fans:
“For family. For faith. For finding purpose.
“For the next year of earning a Masters degree in Policy Management at Georgetown University in Washington DC.
“Wish us well. 😊🙏🏽🫶🏽🙌🏽👌🏽”
However, some fans speculate the music star “don use style japa” as it is uncommon for people to move with their families for just a one-year program.
“Japa” in Nigeria is local slang, meaning to run away.
Banky W was born in the US and later relocated to Nigeria to pursue his music career. He married Adesua Etomi in 2017 and ventured into politics, contesting under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) twice for Nigeria’s House of Representatives for Eti-Osa Federal Constituency in Lagos State. However, he lost in both instances.
